29 Oct Why Planning for 2020 is Unlike Anything Else
Every year at this time, forward-thinking businesses start planning for the year ahead. Budgets are considered, spreadsheets reviewed, forecasts are developed and analyzed. In the communications field, we focus on trend lines, social media, new audiences and tailored messaging. But make no mistake, planning for 2020 will be unlike any recent year, because this year is a big one.
First, it’s the change of a decade. Changes of decades offer a fresh start, a new perspective, a chance to take risks, and for many companies to celebrate milestones. They also set the tone for what is to come with new ideas, technology, and changes to the business landscape. Companies should utilize 2020 to capture a re-branding opportunity, launch of new product or service or announce a new initiative for their corporate social responsibility. Now is the time to strategize how your company or organization will take advantage of what the public regards as an opportunity for a fresh start.
It’s the rare year number that can be incorporated directly into your messaging. The New Year can refer to perfect vision, double-meanings, and an overall ‘cool factor’ with 2020 have a repetitious number involved. Just saying 2020 out loud proves this out – it really does have a nice ring to it. Businesses can offer discounts, contests or campaigns with the number 20 involved, set new language and their design in their graphic identity and so much more. If you’re selling glasses, contacts or eye care products, or if you happen to be an eye doctor, this is the year for you!
It’s a presidential election year. Presidential election years are particularly exciting for business. There could be ways to have messaging play into the election, utilize power to take a position of advocacy on important issues, and or just have some fun with language surrounding our candidates or election process. Advertising gets consumed by political candidates and so there is often advantage to shift from advertising to public relations initiatives to combat oversaturation of political content. In 2020, showcasing a sense of humor as the barbs fly will help your brand stand out from the pack.
Take the time to plan effectively for 2020 knowing that this is the beginning of something big. This decade is likely to offer advancements in ways we’ve never imagined. We’re excited for 2020 and hope you are as well.
