Oscar Worthy PR Blunders That Will Make You Laugh

There’s nothing like a major fail to make someone laugh (or yourself laugh even). We learned that the recent flub at the Oscars is one that will keep America buzzing for a bit. To continue the spirit of major fails, we put together a list of PR Blunders from our very brave team members. Enjoy!

–         Fall back. “I was meeting with a prominent CEO for an important discussion. We had lunch plans to discuss a project. I arrived at the restaurant early, made sure I studied the menu (to avoid any distraction) and that I had my notebook and talking points ready. As soon as I saw him walk through the door, I was so eager to see him that I tried to stand up and wave when my foot got hooked on the chair and I went falling backwards to the ground. The entire restaurant saw as well as my client. I was so mortified that for the rest of the lunch I’m sure my face was red and my back ached.”

–         That time I got out of a speeding ticket because I explained how a leprechaun and a news station were part of my day. “First things first, don’t speed! But I learned my lesson as I was pulled over since I was rushing from one news station, to another, then to a meeting, I had media props in my car, my hair a mess from starting the day at 3:30 a.m. and still had much more to do. I explained to the officer the crazy news segments I was working on (one food related for St. Patrick’s Day involving a leprechaun, a hoola-hooper, another related to prostate cancer) and how early my day started. He listened as I also explained how I was very close to my next destination. I think my story was crazy enough that he let me go with a warning.”

–         Client showed up to our office and we showed up to theirs (to our defense, the calendar invite showed OUR address). “Yes, this one wasn’t funny at the time. When we arrived at the client’s office my phone kept ringing from our receptionist’s number. After the third time of her calling, I answered to find out the client was at our location. They had it mixed up but we made it work since we were about 15 minutes away. Now we can laugh about it whenever we’re scheduling a meeting with them. You know which location, right?”

–         Howling good time. “Conducting a conference call with a very conservative business client in China while working from home and my roommate’s hound dog started howling causing two other dogs in the house to howl at the top of their lungs and there was no quiet place to hide!”

–         Cat-astrophe. “Having a video conference call where the client’s cat decided to join in and swat the camera. We all got a good laugh.”

–         Case of the hiccups. “One of our clients got the hiccups just as an interview started. Thankfully it was a recorded interview instead of live!”

–         Blues over red carpet delivery. “I worked with a long-time vendor for many events. We ordered a red carpet from them just like we did many other times. This was a last-minute event, so everything was hurried. The carpet arrived the day-of the event due to the expedited situation, and instead of being red, the carpet was blue. We made the best out of it and laughed later.”

–         Weekend plans? “Emailed a client once (on accident) where I meant to email my friends asking about their weekend plans. I was single at the time and so was the gentleman, so it probably appeared like it was something else (will never use work email for personal ever again!).”

–         What’s that smell? “I pumped gas prior to a very important meeting. For whatever reason, the gas overflowed, getting on my clothing. I had to decide to cancel or attend the meeting smelling of gas. I ended up going and explaining the overwhelming smell. From this day forward I bring a change of clothes for work.”
