Wondering how to connect with the media? Get emotional!
Yes, we’re talking about tapping into some deeper emotions today. Internally, we recently had an exercise discussing this very topic. We had a bunch of fun getting emotional; but all joking aside, if you want to connect with the media, you must think along these lines.
Take a look at what is on the news currently. You will find coverage of situations that elicit fear, tears, joy, and a whole range of other emotions.
So when you’re ready to make the big pitch to the media, try not to think of how you are going to tell your company’s story or sell your company’s product. That will almost be a sure-fire way to not get media coverage. Rather, think about the emotion behind it.
If you have trouble eliciting the needed emotion from your story, go back to the basics. Think about what it is that you want to tell the media about. Next think about why people might care. Go deep into this (i.e. people don’t care because they can save money, but rather what the money saved might do for their lives, utility bills, needed healthcare costs and more).
Here are some simple questions you can ask when getting emotional:
- Does your business help people achieve a goal, find joy, or help someone get relief of some type?
- Is there a customer or client who has been through extraordinary circumstances and overcome odds and it’s partly due to your business?
- Does your business give back to a charitable organization and if so, why? What does that organization do to change people’s lives and therefore, what do you do to help the cause?
- How does your business affect people’s personal lives (even if what you do doesn’t inherently impact their personal lives on the surface)?
- Can you imagine being in the shoes of a client (even hypothetical) who faced extraordinary circumstances and what that must feel like? How can your business help others with this?
These are just some starting point questions to help get you going, but we do hope this helps in terms of the beginning process of positioning your business to achieve more successful media coverage by getting emotional.
Stay tuned for more as we uncover the next additional layers of getting emotional in the future. In the meantime, if you would like a consultation for your business on how to best connect with the media, don’t hesitate to reach out at www.nspublicrelations.com.
