GTE Financial Plans To Install 61 Skimmer-Proof ATMs
TAMPA, Fla. – GTE Financial Credit Union here said it is installing 61 new ATMs with skimmer-proof technology. GTE FCU said its machines have been targeted by thieves using skimming devices in the past.
GTE Financial told ABCActionNews.com that each of the upgraded ATMs costs about $35,000, but that ATMs hit by skimmers can cost the credit union as much as about $50,000. The new ATMs, the first of which will be installed this week, will be at all GTE branches and Tropicana Field.
GTE Financial CU CIO/COO Chad Burney told ABCActionNews.com that in the event a thief attempts to place a skimmer on the ATM, “the machine will sense it, it will shut itself down, it’ll start flashing red.”
With the new ATMs, consumers insert plastic cards horizontally instead of vertically. The card goes completely inside the machine. The magnetic strip goes in first, and skimming devices can’t reach it, according to GTE Financial.
