How to Use Holidays and Observances to Benefit Your Business

Yesterday was National Thrift Store Day, and while many of you reading this may have not been aware of this, one of our clients was aware and we helped get them some pretty amazing media coverage.

Is our client a thrift store? No. Our client is a hospice and wellness health care group who happens to have estate items for sale at their thrift stores from patients/families who passed away or donated. All proceeds from purchases benefit the nonprofit organization.

So, want the scoop on how we got them media coverage and how to apply the same principles to your business? Here’s how you can use holidays and observances to your advantage.

Start with a road map. To be able to benefit from a national holiday or observance you have to know about it well in advance. Just accidentally stumbling upon it and making social media posts on the fly won’t bring the media or customers to your door.

Look at all observances. Don’t be afraid to look at all national observances, even the obscure ones. Taking an obscure or different topic than your industry can be fun and spark brand new ideas. These ideas can turn into media coverage gold, and greater word-of-mouth traffic for your revenue. So go ahead and celebrate national ravioli day, have a cook-off or fundraiser from the ravioli sales and make a difference in the community, for example.

Execute with full intention. Don’t slap a few things together for your observance. If you’re celebrating a certain day or month, really get into it from the top down. Have executives lead the way and affect every person in the organization. This way, your impact will be greater and increase the possibilities of people doing business with you.

Comprehensive appeal. From your social media posts, to marketing materials, sales will be affected by your celebration of a national observance the more you have a comprehensive appeal. This means, use the message in your graphic design, eblasts, press releases, social campaigns, even email signature lines! Just doing one communications piece will likely not be very effective; so make sure your efforts are comprehensive and complete.

At nspr, we truly love celebrating national holidays and observances in a smart way that increases positive reputations, brand awareness and, of course, customer traffic for our clients. It’s a great way to get creative and have all members of our clients’ organizations get involved.
